August 2011 - For the third time, Inc. magazine has ranked Aeneas Internet and Telephone on its annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies.

Previously named in 2008 and 2010, Aeneas Internet and Telephone joins the company of enterprises that have appeared on the list on the list multiple times, many of which have grown to become national icons. In the state of Tennessee, only 77 companies have appeared on the list multiple times.

For more than 30 years, Inc.'s list has represented the most comprehensive look at America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. “More than ever, this year's list is a testament to the creativity, resilience and tenacity of America's top entrepreneurs,” says Inc. Editor in Chief, Jane Berentson. The average company on this year's list is outstripping the pace of the economy as a whole by a factor of 10. The 2011 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2007 to 2010.

"Making the Inc 5000 list for a third time is a great validation of our employees and the hard work they do," says Jonathan Harlan, founder and CEO of Aeneas Internet and Telephone. "We're proud that the state of Tennessee has embraced and supported us as an alternative to the big national companies like AT&T. It's our customers that make this recognition possible."

Previously named in 2008, Aeneas Internet and Telephone has been honored again. The list represents the most comprehensive look at America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. “The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”

The 2010 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2006 to 2009. Despite the fact that most of this year’s measuring period of 2006-2009 took place during the latest recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $321.6 billion, up more than 50 percent from last year. This year’s Inc. 5000 employ a record 1.4 million people, up from one million on last year’s list.

"We’re honored to be recognized by Inc. magazine twice," says Jonathan Harlan, founder and CEO of Aeneas Internet and Telephone. Founded in 1996, Aeneas Internet and Telephone has grown from just 2 employees to its current roster of 30 employees. "It's rewarding to be recognized on a national level for our continuing growth, and the best part is we're still expanding," Harlan says. "We're rolling out more products here in West Tennessee, and we're excited that we're going to be able to offer more competitive services in Middle Tennessee next year. I think our growth is only beginning."

August 2007 - West Tennessee’s own Aeneas Internet and Telephone has been named to Entrepreneur magazine’s annual “Hot 500” list of 2007’s fastest growing businesses.

Entrepreneur and the Corporate Research Board chose the top 500 fastest growing businesses from a pool of 95,000 finalists. Finalists were chosen based on criteria such as foundation date, company sales growth, and positive job growth. To be eligible, the founder needed to be actively involved in the company, the company could not be a division of a larger company, and company sales for 2006 had to be at least $1 million. From this list, the Hot 500 were selected. "The Hot 500 is our annual ranking of the fastest-growing Entrepreneurial businesses. We're proud to salute America's leading Entrepreneurial companies, which contribute so much to the nation's and the world's economy," said Rieva Lesonsky, senior VP of Entrepreneur, in a magazine press release. Aeneas Internet and Telephone is ranked at number 343 out of 500.

"We’re honored to be listed along with other leading Entrepreneurial businesses in the Hot 500 issue of Entrepreneur," said Jonathan Harlan, founder and CEO of Aeneas Internet and Telephone. "It’s a wonderful validation of the hard work our staff has put in to bring our customers the high-quality local service you just can’t get from the bigger companies." Founded by CEO Jonathan Harlan in 1996, Aeneas Internet and Telephone has grown from just 2 employees to its current roster of 28 employees.

September 2007 - Aeneas chosen for BusinessTN magazine's Hot 100 list.

This year, BusinessTN introduces the Hot100, an expanded revamp of the original Fast50. Eligible companies are still required to be Tennessee-based, employ at least five people and have revenues in excess of $750,000. And, like PIPS, they must be companies with a bright future. However, this new list does more than just double the number of companies profiled. It also expands the criteria in an effort to include those more established companies whose growth is remarkable but who do not—cannot—keep pace with young startup companies rocketing to early success. Additional criteria includes employee growth, growth over a period of years and growth as compared to industry average.

The Hot100 also inescapably involves increased editorial judgment. BusinessTN’s staff chose 33% of the companies on this list based on knowledge of the company’s success and references from knowledgeable sources about area companies performing well. That change made it all the more difficult for applicants to make the list: the number of applications submitted reached an all-time high just as the percentage of submitting companies selected for the list hit an all-time low.

In sum, the inaugural Hot100 spotlights companies from industries as wide ranging as missile defense to barbecue. They are the companies enriching our local and regional economies, providing jobs and fueling the Volunteer State’s entrepreneurial culture. The stories behind these businesses speak volumes about the value of free enterprise. They aren’t a bad read, either.

To better and more quickly differentiate between the kinds of success placing each company on this list, we’re adding the following designations:

Blast-Off! Young companies off to a fast start

Steady Orbit Companies now beyond the startup years that continue to grow at an above-average rate and that are laying the foundation for long-term sustainability

Change of Trajectory Companies which due to recent trends, events or business decisions have become especially hot in their niche

Solar Flare Large, firmly established companies experiencing a new growth or whose growth against the industry baseline is remarkable

Jonathan V. Harlan Founder & CEO

Founded in 1995, Aeneas claims status as the first company to bring the Internet to rural Tennessee. Named for the hero of Virgil's The Aeneid, who survived the destruction of Troy to become the founder of Rome, the company lived up to its mythical namesake in 2003, when the company's home office was hit by the F-4 tornado that struck Jackson. Aeneas restored the bulk of its services within 72 hours.
